Are You Being Salt? By Bill Keller
Are you being “salt?” Salt was used in the days of Jesus as a preservative to keep germs from destroying food, so when Jesus told us to be the "salt of the earth," in essence, He was saying that we are to act as spiritual preservative.
As I look at our country at the beginning of 2020, there appears to be a paradox. On one hand, we have more churches, more para-church ministries, incredible resources such as Christian television, radio, magazines, books, and believers in Christ commit billions of dollars annually to promote the Gospel.
However, abortions continue daily, legalized gambling is a part of our culture, the adult entertainment industry is growing by 25% annually, divorce rates are at an all-time high, the problems with our children are well documented, suicides have risen at an alarming rate.
Common sense compels us to think that our Christian influence would be affecting our society in a positive direction, yet that does not appear to be the case.
Recently, a bishop in the Church of England stated, “Culture trumps the Bible!”
Sadly, many who profess faith in Christ have accepted this lie to one degree or another. Instead of believers preserving the culture (being the salt), culture is pulling the Lord’s people into the quagmire of its unbelief!
Yet, in the deteriorating culture around us, it is ONLY the influence of God's people that has kept our society from total depravity. God's people HAVE been the "salt of the earth" or we would be living in a much more corrupt world.
The Bible doesn’t tell us that we will live in a world that is void of sin and rebellion. Jesus prepared believers for the reality that in this world they WOULD have many trials and tribulations.
Until our work here is finished, and we are called home to be with the Lord for eternity, we are expected to be His "salt," to preserve His TRUTH in this world that is steeped in lies. We are called to be His "light," in a world that is increasingly engulfed in the darkness of sin
Are you the "salt of the earth?” Are you acting as a spiritual preservative?
God has given you gifts, talents, and abilities to act as His spiritual preservative and as His light in the decay and darkness of the world.
Are you using them to His glory?
