The Danger of Even Mild Dog Bites
The bacteria inside the dog's mouth—which was introduced to the victims' systems via even relatively mild bites--can lead to deadly infections.
"If a dog bite pierces a person's skin, bacteria from the animal's mouth can get into the body," explained a 2019 report on dog bites by Medical News Today. "If the bacteria stay in the body, they can cause an infection, such as tetanus, rabies, or sepsis."
The publication noted that in some cases, these infections can spread from the bite site to other body parts—and that "certain infections...can be very serious and lead to complications," including death.
"Bites on the hands or feet carry a higher risk of infection," they added.
