GOD Is Love

And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.      1 John 4:16

Truly, the most profound words ever spoken are—not with complex syntax or intricate convoluted grammar—but a simple sentence: “God is love.” Only three words: “God is love.” And those words, like a magician’s wand, forever changed the way the world thought. But they were backed up by deeds; the love of God was manifested in the life and love of Jesus Christ

We are so used to hearing about God’s love for us that we view it as our right and privilege to be loved by God. But the world into which Christ came was not at all familiar with that concept. The pagan gods were temperamental, capricious, and unpredictable. They were to be appeased, not loved. The idea of a God that loved was strange.

Then Jesus came, and now we know: God is love.

So many of us are influenced by the movies that come out of Hollywood and the programs that we see on TV that we have profoundly convoluted the meaning and the substance of love.

We associate love with romance, with unbridled passion and the man-made love we yearn to embrace has nothing of GOD in it.

If someone were to give me a bag filled with hundred dollar bills, and if those bills added up to a billion dollars, I would consider myself to be extremely wealthy -- until those hundred dollar bills were identified as being counterfeit.  

Just as a billion counterfeit dollars do not make me a billionaire, neither does having the passionate, irresponsible counterfeit love of the world make me loved.

To young people, looking for the love of their life, I would admonish you to conduct your search among your believing friends, not among your worldly friends.  I would admonish you to seek love among those who love GOD and who have accepted JESUS as their personal Savior and Lord.

The love that you pledge between you will then be the wondrous love of GOD.  The love you pledge between you will be the eternal love of the HOLY ONE that lasts a lifetime and endures for eternity.  The love you pledge between you will indeed be GOD'S "LOVE THAT NEVER FAILS."  I Corinthians 13:8.
