Where Were You? Moments
There are some events in life that can never be forgotten. Some are very personal and relate to jobs, relationships, loves. Others are national moments that will live forever in the collective memory of a people.
For Americans of a certain age, there are two such unforgettable events -- the destruction on 9/11 and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Fifty-eight years ago, our young president was taken from us and with him went the innocence of America. The nation had been on an emotional high after the victory of WW II. Peace had been restored to a troubled world and prosperity attended every worker who desired employment.
"The sky is the limit," became the motto of young Americans who were assured that the future ahead of them would be even more prosperous than what their parents had experienced because technology and science were on the rise -- technology would improve employment opportunities and medical science would prolong mankind's time to enjoy the fruit of those opportunities.
Kennedy's assassination dispelled the hope and brought a stinging reality to all of us -- THERE IS NO PROMISE FOR TOMORROW.
As believers in CHRIST, we can only conclude from JFK's assassination and from 9/11 that the only promise that is secure is the one JESUS holds out to every man -- HE WHO BELIEVES IN ME, THOUGH HE WERE DEAD, YET SHALL HE LIVE, AND WHOEVER LIVES AND BELIEVES IN ME SHALL NEVER DIE.
