Using God’s Name to Honor Him

Using God’s Name to Honor Him by Dr. D. James Kennedy

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold guiltless anyone who takes His name in vain. Exodus 20:7

The law of gravity says that if you step off the roof of a 30-story building, you will be dead. That is not a threat. It is a fact—a very simple fact. And if you take the name of God in vain, it is a fact that God will not hold you guiltless. What does that mean? It means you shall not go unpunished.
As a young man in my late teens and early twenties I, on occasion, used profanity and used the name of God in vain. Then I learned of the immense love of Jesus Christ. I learned that when He was on that Cross, He was agonizing for me; that what He endured there, He was enduring for my sake and in my place. As my substitute, in my stead the wrath of God fell on His head for my sins. And with many tears I fell to my knees and invited Him into my heart to be the Lord and Savior of my life. That was many years ago. To the best of my remembrance, and I think in this case it is accurate, since that time I have not once in all these years taken the name of Jesus Christ in vain. That is because I love Him, and I want to honor His name.

The Reality of Mortality

You may have heard about the man who died after his eighteen-foot snake wrapped itself around his neck. Or the woman who scared off a grizzly bear on a Montana camping trip but was killed when it returned and attacked her in her sleep.

In a real sense, their stories are our stories. The moment we are born, we begin to die. This morning, you and I are one day closer to eternity than ever before. (For more on death in biblical perspective, please see my latest website article, "
What happens when you die?")

However, my purpose is not to discourage you but to encourage you in a way all Christians can—and should—embrace. The reality of our mortality is powerfully liberating when we view it through an extremely countercultural but very biblical lens.

Mistaken Obituaries

The mistaken obituaries of
Tony Dow and Alfred Nobel
How the reality of death liberates us to live fully today
by Dr. Jim Denison

Tony Dow, a teenage star in the popular 1950s and 60s comedy series Leave It to Beaverdied Wednesday at his California home at the age of seventy-seven. Since many of you are not old enough to remember the show and others of you have likely not thought about it in years, why am I beginning today’s Daily Article with this news?

Because Mr. Dow’s death was erroneously reported the day before he died. It seems his distraught wife
believed her husband was dead and notified his management team, who reported his death to the world. He was actually still alive but in hospice care suffering from cancer. He passed away the next day.

This story brought to mind one of the most famous cases of mistaken death in history. In 1888, a man named Ludvig Nobel
died in France from a heart attack. However, at least one French newspaper believed that Ludvig’s better-known brother Alfred had perished and proceeded to write a scathing obituary branding him a "merchant of death." This was because Alfred had invented dynamite and had become hugely wealthy from nearly one hundred factories that made explosives and munitions.

After this erroneous obituary, one biographer said Alfred Nobel "became so obsessed with his posthumous reputation that he rewrote his last will, bequeathing most of his fortune to a cause upon which no future obituary writer would be able to cast aspersions."

That cause was the Nobel Prize.

DOJ's Double Standard

Craig Bannister (Jul 27, 2022)

"The really dangerous thing that we're seeing, as a consequence of what's playing out here in this double standard that you've pointed out, is the clear message of fear: that, if you speak out against us, if you're an opponent of the Powers-That-Be, then the Department of Justice can go after you and charge you and prosecute you ... This is the telltale sign of an authoritarian regime and directly undermines our democracy..." -Tulsi Gabbard

[CNSNews.com] "Our Department of Justice is being weaponized as a political hit squad," Former Democrat congresswoman (Hawaii) Tulsi Gabbard said Monday, commenting on how Democrats held in contempt of Congress have not been indicted, but former Trump White House official Steve Bannon has.

In a Fox News Channel interview, Gabbard was asked to comment on the double standard after Host Greta Van Susteren listed some of the Democrats who've been let off the hook after being held in contempt of Congress.

"This is just the latest example of how our Department of Justice is being weaponized as a political hit squad to go after the political opponents of the Powers-That-Be that are in charge," Gabbard said, emphasizing the importance of public trust in the country's legal system:

"You know, in our democracy, We-The-People need to be able to trust in the rule of law. We need to be able to trust that institutions like the Department of Justice and our law enforcement entities are truly acting in the public interest and that we will all be treated fairly and equally under the law, regardless of any other factors, regardless of our political viewpoints, of who we voted for or who we are speaking out for or against."

The current Justice Department's actions are sending out "the clear message of fear" to anyone who dares to criticize the Biden Administration, Gabbard said:

"The really dangerous thing that we're seeing, as a consequence of what's playing out here in this double standard that you've pointed out, is the clear message of fear: that, if you speak out against us, if you're an opponent of the Powers-That-Be, then the Department of Justice can go after you and charge you and prosecute you.

"However, if you are on the other team, if you are in agreement with, or liked by, those in power, then we're going to treat you kindly, or you'll get off the hook, and you won't be treated in the same way that your political opponents will be."

"This is the telltale sign of an authoritarian regime and directly undermines our democracy. That is really what's at the core of what's wrong here," Gabbard warned.

"It's mind-blowing to see this double standard at play," Gabbard said. "And, again, the more serious issue is how directly this threatens and undermines our democracy and the faith that we need to have in these public institutions and public officials."

The one-sided January 6th Committee investigation is further proof of how Congress is more concerned with power than with serving the American people, Gabbard said:

"You see how lopsided or one-sided this whole January 6th committee is first of all—to present information without having any opposing views or even discerning questions being asked of a lot of these people who are testifying.

"There's no surprise here to see how one-sided the outcome is becoming, and the response that people are having.

"That's one example of many, unfortunately, where Congress is more driven by who can be in power and stay in power and go after political opponents than they are actually concerned about presenting the truth, passing legislation that serves the best interests of the people in the country."

Whose Side Is Biden On?

Selling Oil Reserves to China

Selling Oil Reserves to China by Bill Wilson

Joe Biden was exposed last month for selling part of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to a communist Chinese company with ties to his son Hunter while Americans are suffering from his energy-policy induced inflation. Well, Biden’s at it again. According to Department of Energy disclosures, the sales to Unipec America continued in July with another 950,000 barrels for an ongoing tally of nearly six million barrels. Unipec America is the trading arm of Sinopec, owned by the Communist Chinese government, in which Joe Biden’s son Hunter has held up to a ten percent business ownership. Hunter Biden’s lawyer says Hunter no longer holds a stake in the company. Chinese documents say otherwise.

Moreover, an analysis by the Epoch Times indicates that Unipec America is buying the oil from the SPR at prices less than the highest bids—meaning there is at least the appearance that the Biden family is benefiting from the sale of America’s strategic petroleum reserves to communist China while Americans suffer. The Epoch Times reports: “Sales to Unipec appear to fall in the lower price range among the successful buyers...For the 2021 contract, Unipec paid about $63 for each barrel, about $7 lower than the trading price at the time, and more than $2 short of the highest price from other buyers in the sale. The April and July purchases cost Unipec $103.30 and $119.50 per barrel, respectively. The highest prices offered, by comparison, were $111.25 and $125.10.”

The Washington Free Beacon reported in June that BHR Partners, a private equity firm Hunter Biden cofounded in 2013, “bought a $1.7 billion stake in Sinopec Marketing in 2015. Biden at one point owned a 10 percent stake in BHR Partners through his wholly owned firm, Skaneateles, LLC…Chinese business records still list Biden’s firm as a BHR shareholder, and Washington, D.C., records still show Biden as the firm's owner.” The entire escapade has caught the eye of 10 members of Congress, Led by Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC). They sent a letter to Joe Biden documenting the Unipec deal among others, and concluding: “These allegations are severely unsettling, and if true, may even constitute an impeachable offense under the “bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors” clause of Article 2 of the Constitution.”

The letter asked that specific information be provided the congressmen by July 25 and warned: “Those in power, especially our commander-in-chief, must think about how their actions impact the people they were elected to serve. The purpose of the SPR is “primarily to reduce the impact of disruptions in supplies of petroleum products” and supply crude oil to Americans during times of national emergency. The oil within the Strategic Petroleum Reserve was intended for the American people, not for adversarial countries, and certainly not to make the Biden Family richer at a time when our citizens are paying almost $5.00 a gallon for gasoline and $6.00 for diesel.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22 exhorts, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” Biden’s actions not only appear evil, they are, say it with me…Stupid and Traitorous.

Two Truths and a Lie

Two truths and a Lie

Considered one the fastest growing and largest groups in Christianity, the modern Pentecostal denomination is a renewal movement birthed at the turn of the 20th Century, marked by historical revivals.

Although its start is usually attributed to the 1906 Azusa Street Revival (1906), some Church historians report it beginning even earlier at two Holiness meetings, one in Topeka, Kansas (1901) and even earlier in an 1896 Cherokee County, North Carolina gathering.

Regardless, this denomination’s beginning is based on the Pentecost event recorded in Acts 2:1-4, considering it as its biblical and spiritual beginning, where the early Christians received the baptism of the Holy Spirit:

“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

Pentecostals' Biblical Beginning

Taking place 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus, the first Pentecost is marked as the start of the Church’s outreach to spread the Gospel around the world, fulfilling a prophecy by John the Baptist who foretold of believers receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

When asked if he were the Christ, “John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire’” (Luke 3:16).

#1 Truth: Pentecostal Includes a Range of Groups

There is a wide spectrum of denominations underneath the Pentecostal heading, with denominations starting in the early 1900s often referred to as the “first wave” of the move of the Holy Spirit upon the Church, forming Pentecostal Holiness denominations referred to as Classical Pentecostals.

First Wave

Classical Pentecostals’ foundation is based on speaking in tongues as the first evidence of being baptized with the Holy Spirit. Divine healing is also prevalent. Well-known leaders in this first wave include Smith Wigglesworth and William J. Seymour known for the Azusa Street revival.

As well, Aimee Semple McPherson founded the Foursquare Church Denominations associated with this “first wave” including the Assemblies of God (1914) and Church of God (Cleveland, TN).

Second Wave

During the 1960s, there arose the Charismatic Denominations often referred to as the “second wave.” Whereas speaking in tongues along with the other gifts of the Spirit are encouraged, many do not hold to its Pentecostal roots belief with it as the first evidence of being a Spirit-filled believer.

Leaders associated with the “second wave” include Kathryn Kuhlman known for holding faith-healing meetings; Kenneth E. Hagin, a pioneer of Word of Faith teaching; Oral Roberts known for his divine healing tent meetings; and faith healer and deliverance minister, A.A. Allen.

Interestingly in 1967, the Catholic Church became a part of the wider Charismatic movement worldwide, when two Catholics from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Duquesne University attended a Protestant worship service and experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Soon the Charismatic influence spread within the Catholic Church, with Francis MacNutt, a former American Roman Catholic priest, at the forefront of its movement.

Third Wave

More recently, churches like the Vineyard Churches have risen up, sometimes referred to as Neo-Pentecostals or “the third wave." John Wimber, who although starting out as an ordained Quaker pastor, went on to begin the Vineyard Churches where teaching “Signs and Wonders,” and ”Power Evangelism” became its trademarks

As well, leaders emerged like C. Peter Wagner, Rick Joyner, Jack Deere, Mike Bickle, Mahesh Chavda, Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen, and Joyce Meyer.

(Critics of the “third wave” assert the movement is based more on personal experiences than sound biblical doctrine.)

#2 Truth: Pentecostals Believe in Speaking in Tongues

One of the most controversial beliefs challenged by other denominations outside the Pentecostal realm is the group’s emphasis on speaking in tongues. The founding movement believed it is the first evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit.

There are two types of speaking in tongues generally recognized. One is seen as a personal prayer language, personally benefiting and building-up the one speaking. It’s also the one most highly criticized by those outside Pentecostal circles, considered “babbling” by some.

The second type is the speaking of a known language for the benefit of the Church, which many biblical scholars believe is the speaking in tongues that took place in the Acts 2 Pentecost.

From the very beginning, as described in Acts 2:5-6, tongues has been a controversial topic. “Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. And when this sound rang out, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.”

The Apostle Peter had to step in to calm the crowd down (Acts 2:14-21), reciting Joel 2:28-29 to help them understand what they were hearing and seeing. “And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days."

Lie: All Pentecostals Adhere to Strict Modesty and Moral Guidelines

Not all Pentecostal groups stick to a strict set of rules when it comes to modesty and moral guidelines.

Women’s Modesty Issues

Through the years, there has been a focus on women’s modesty when it comes to clothing, hair, and make-up – meaning no tight, clingy clothes, slacks or shorts, keeping their hair long, and not wearing make-up or jewelry. But it’s not the majority.

These denominational guidelines are based on Scriptures like 1 Timothy 2:9, which encourage, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pears or expensive clothes.”

Other supportive verses include 1 Peter 3:3-5, explaining how holy women of the past, ones who put their trust in God, adorned themselves: “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

In the birth of the Pentecostal movement, many followed these guidelines, but in more recent years, it flip-flopped where groups have been widely criticized for wearing big hair, heavy make-up, and flashy clothes. Pentecostal high-profile ministers and celebrities such as Tammy Faye Bakker and Jan Crouch endured much public ridicule for their flamboyant hair, make-up, and wardrobe.

Abstaining from Worldly Activities

As well, although Pentecostals were known for their strict moral guidelines of not attending movie theaters or dances based on their belief these activities originate from worldly and sinful places like Hollywood and Broadway, many followers now openly participate in both.

Abstaining from such activities came from following Scripture 1 John 2:15: “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.”

Likewise inspired by, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

As well as, 1 Thessalonians 5:22, “Reject every kind of evil.”

Although worldly entertainment was frowned on, surprisingly some of the world’s favorite celebrities have deep Pentecostal roots, such as Denzel Washington who explains, “My father was a minister for 50 years with Pentecostal Church of God in Christ.”

As well music legend Dolly Parton, whose grandpa was a Pentecostal minister, noted by her as being a great musician who played the fiddle and piano, and accredited for her early beginnings in music.
