Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, first lady Rosalynn, have reached such a rare marriage milestone, the U.S. Census Bureau doesn’t keep numbers on how many couples make it so long.
The Carters are celebrating an incredible 76 years of marriage — the longest in presidential history.
According to the Census Bureau, only 6% of marriages make it to the 50-year mark.
It seems one of the secrets to Carter’s marriage is the way he esteems his wife better than himself (Philippians 2:3), treasuring his relationship with her above all other accomplishments.

Carter, a Christian and longtime Baptist Sunday school teacher, was the 39th president of the United States and the winner of a Nobel Peace Prize. But the greatest moment of his life, he said in 2015, was saying “I do” to Rosalynn Smith on July 7, 1946, at a Methodist church in Plains, Georgia.
“The best thing I ever did was marrying Rosalynn,” he said. “That’s the pinnacle of my life.”
Carter, 97, was a 21-year-old U.S. Naval Academy graduate when he tied the knot with then-18-year-old Rosalynn, the salutatorian of Plains High School. The former first lady is now 94 years old.
Next to the Carters, the longest married president in history was the late former President George H.W. Bush, who was married to former first lady Barbara for 73 years and 102 days, before her death in 2018.
In Ephesians 5, Christian husbands are commanded to love their wives the way Jesus loves His church and gave Himself up for her and wives are called to respect their husbands as they “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21, NIV).
Happy anniversary to former President and first lady Carter!
