We’ve used the term ‘right-hand man’ a time or two when referencing someone who fills an important role by helping us to accomplish the things that are important to us. From a vice-president who represents the head of state at social functions to the secretary who keeps a chief executive on schedule, these are individuals who make the tasks of those they assist much more manageable.
We all value highly those reliable people who are unwavering in their willingness to assist us and who are highly competent in their ability to do so. Though some of us have only menial things to accomplish, we appreciate the help of the people around us who facilitate our success by their encouragement and appreciation of what we do.
There is One high and lofty individual who counts on us for our help. It is not that He needs our input, for He is entirely capable of achieving all His goals totally on His own, but He has ordained that things on Planet Earth shall be accomplished through His use of our skilled hands and willing hearts. That One, of course, is Jesus. He told us, in fact, that He would accomplish great things through us (see John 14:12).
Our God does not leave us alone to perform the tasks He sets before us. Rather, He considers Himself to be our ‘right-hand man’ as we labor to accomplish His work. As David said in Psalm 16:8, “I have set the Lord continually before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” The One who used His right hand to hurl the stars into space, offers it to us, to assist us in fulfilling the tasks He gives us to do.
