The Wage of Sin

The Wage of Sin

Nobody wants to work for nothing. To labor without pay is to be reduced to virtual slavery.
At a time soon after the American Revolution, a group of disgruntled military gathered to protest because they had fought for years without remuneration. Their ire was justified...they had been willing to lay down their lives for freedom, but they weren't willing to walk away from their efforts with empty purses.

As they were congregating together, George Washington joined them. The mere sight of him struck their hearts to the core. He reiterated to them his empathy for their contribution to the attainment of freedom for the new nation. He shared with them the sacrifices he had himself made to the nation's cause.

Some of these war-hardened men were moved to tears, for all of them reverenced their great leader and knew his sincerity and his personal integrity.

They disbanded without the exchange of monies, but arrangements were made by Washington that they should be given the wages they had earned. A very wealthy Marylander wrote a personal check that covered their back pay.

Freedom isn't free. These men had all paid a price for it and that expenditure on their parts was remunerated by a thankful government.

Freedom isn't free. We have "all sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23 We are all due the wage of the sin we've committed, but our loving God has covered the cost at great personal sacrifice.

Will we receive the "unspeakable gift," II Corinthians 9:15, He has given to us, or will we demand that the wage of our sin be meted out to us?
