There
is much in the news regarding gun control and the Second Amendment of
our Constitution which includes the "right to bear arms." There are
many who believe that were all guns to be confiscated, the incidence of
crime would be reduced in our nation.
There is merit to that argument but there is great danger in abrogating the document upon which our society stands. If first one right may be taken from us, what is to stop a government from rescinding others? What will become of freedom of speech? Freedom of assembly? Freedom of religion?

And, of course, the question comes to mind of criminals and the fact
that they would be unlikely to give up their guns. Were all honorable
men who own guns to be persuaded to relinquish their arms, only the
criminal element of our society would possess them.
Perhaps above all is the fact that removal of guns from the hands of our citizenry would not remove sin from the heart. Cain did not possess a firearm, but he managed to slay his brother Able.
Evil men who have violence in their hearts and minds will find a way to carry out their deeds no matter what weapons are available to them.
And what about a government gone mad with power? We who have lived in "the land of the free and the home of the brave" for the entirety of our lives cannot fathom the kind of government against which our founding fathers rebelled.
We cannot imagine taking up arms against our leadership as they did...but what could happen if we were unarmed and unable to do so? Perhaps the signers of the Constitution harbored the fear that they might become what they abhorred.
If they recognized that possibility, shouldn't we?
