Worthless Things
If you were to turn your eyes away from the worthless things that distract you from turning your eyes fully upon JESUS, from what would you turn?
Above all, you--all of us--would have to turn our eyes from sin, from even our 'pet sin' that holds us back from our devotion to the LORD. That cherished pet might vary from person to person, but each individual has at least one.
Perhaps it is a desire for temporal wealth and possessions. Perhaps we
rob ourselves of time with our families, of time with others of "like
precious faith" in houses of worship, in order to pursue the treasure of
earth and the things to which we can avail ourselves if we spend it to
indulge ourselves.
Perhaps our pet sin is a lust for temporal power...the power to direct the affairs of men and of governments, the ability to assume leadership positions that afford us control over world events.
Perhaps out pet sin is self-aggrandizement. Perhaps we refuse to see ourselves as mere mortals, as ordinary men whose place in life is rather nondescript but choose to see ourselves as role models who are lifted up in the esteem of those around us.
Perhaps our pet sin is lust ... that yearning within that cannot content itself with one, healthy, whole relationship but seeks the attention of scores of lovers.
Whatever has distracted us from our place at the foot of the cross is sin to us, and from it, we must turn away.
May each of us seek the help of the HOLY ONE who has broken the chains of sin that had us bound, for HE has promised to free us from all bondage and given us the power to become --instead of slaves to sin-- sons and daughters of the KING of kings.
