Scarlet O'Hara Syndrome

Scarlett O'Hara

There's a little bit of the 'Scarlett O'Hara syndrome' in all of us. Like her, we say, "I can't think about that right now; I'll think about it tomorrow." So, many things we had hoped to include in our schedules are never done.

The fine china we store in our buffet doesn't get used because we rarely entertain. The new outfit we bought is unworn because we never bother to get 'dressed up' when we go anywhere. The great vacation for which we saved a portion of each paycheck is never taken because we never found the optimum time to go.

So reads the story of our lives...we are forever deferring our hopes and dreams for a better time, but a better time that may never come. The pages of the calendar of our existence keep turning until we finally reach the last page without ever realizing some of our fondest hopes.

Ultimately, there is no real significance to whether or not we use our fine china or wear our best clothes or visit our vacation wonderland, but there is a decision of eternal consequence that we must not defer till tomorrow.

The Bible tells us that "Now is the accepted time; today is the day of salvation." II Corinthians 6:2 If we are so preoccupied with the day-to-day activities of life that we avert our decision regarding Christ until tomorrow, one day that tomorrow won't come.

The Word of God tells us there is an element of eternal separation from God that nags at the lost for all eternity. It says, "The worm dies not." Mark 9:44 In pondering that oft-repeated sentence, one can be in a quandary as to its meaning. What does it intend us to understand?

One theory is that it spotlights the hopeless regret of the person banished to the pit. It will be a regret based not only upon his eternal suffering but also upon the haunting memory of all the times he had the opportunity to embrace Jesus as his Savior and Lord but rejected Him. That gnawing worm will eat away at him forever.

Let us not be so foolish as to put off life's only eternal decision for a more convenient day. Let us grasp the promise of eternal salvation while the opportunity is ours! Let us grasp God's "unspeakable gift," II Corinthians 9:15, TODAY!
