We have drifted so far away from our spiritual roots that when we speak of things in the spirit realm, the only thing that comes to mind is scary movies that may jolt us out of our skin with fright but which we relegate to the area of ‘make-believe,’ of fiction, of contrived notions that have no place in reality.
When we think of people who are ‘spiritual,’ we think of mediums who purport themselves to have powers to see into a realm that doesn’t exist. What do we do then with the Christian who claims to commune with the Holy Spirit of the Living God? Often, he, too, is relegated to the category of 'kooks who don’t have their heads on straight'.
But, the Word of God is clear in the matter! In John 4:24, Jesus says, “God is a Spirit and they who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” Man, in his flesh, can have a fervor for the entity he perceives to be ‘god.’ Man, when he pursues this passion, digs himself into a pit of error from which it is very difficult for him to be extricated.
Whether Western man who is immersed in materialism or Muslim man who is deeply into jihad, man who has zeal but does not have the Holy Spirit of God, is in pursuit of a lie. The lie, whatever its nature, will immerse him in error and sin. Only when he receives the Spirit of the Lord and dwells where He is, will he be free (II Corinthians 3:17.)
