Jesus is the promised Deliverer. The Israelites were promised that One would come who would release them from sin’s vice grip, and they chronicled the promises that spoke of Him throughout the Old Testament. The Promised One would have a heart of compassion for His people, for He would know their frame.
In Isaiah 61:1 the prophet says of Him, “The Lord God has put His Spirit in Me because He has appointed Me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to comfort those whose hearts are broken, to tell the captives they are free and to tell the prisoners they are released.” We were poor and comfortless, held captive to sin—until Jesus came and set us free as promised.
Some who are reading these words may not yet have experienced the joy of having the key of salvation inserted into the prison of their sin. To them I would share the faith of Rich Mullins who said in his beautiful song, MY DELIVERER IS COMING, “He will never break His promise; He has written it upon the sky! My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by.” You may not see Him but He stands at the ready to release you from sin.
Though it may appear that the Lord is slack concerning His promises, the reality is that there is an optimum time for Him to affect the things He has assured us will come and only He knows that time. In one instance, however He tells us when that time is. In II Corinthians 6:2 He says through the Apostle Paul, “…now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of salvation.” Claim Jesus as your own Savior now. Make Him Lord of your life today.
