But in 1943, Bulgarians had had enough.
The Nazis ordered 6,000 Jews to be deported to Poland. Local politician Dimitar Peshev refused. His defiance sparked protests in the streets – an epic rescue effort began. Citizens helped their Jewish neighbors hide.
Clergy forged baptism paperwork. Bulgaria would not comply with the horrors of the Third Reich.
