There appears to be an incredible grass roots movement in Iran where people have taken to the streets demanding an end to the radical Islamic government focused on international terrorism rather than jobs and the economy.  In Ezekiel 38:3-8, the Lord says, "Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: and I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army...Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them...against the mountains of Israel..." These areas mentioned in Ezekiel 38 coincide with modern Turkey, Iran, Sudan, Libya, and parts of Iraq, even Saudi Arabia. So what do the current protests in Iran mean from an end time prophetic lens?

 

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) gives this analysis of the Iranian situation: "Supreme Leader Khamenei declared that Iran must implement a "resistance economy," and blocked the option of Western cooperation in Iran's economic development. At the same time, the billions of Iranian dollars that were frozen by the West and unblocked following the nuclear deal by the United States, were channeled into Iran's involvement in the regional war zones in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Gaza and into the continued development of its military capabilities, for instance by constructing new underground cities to house ballistic missiles, by advancing its military industry, etc."

 

MEMRI says that the protests are caused by anger over the regime using the billions of US dollars given by the previous US administration for military instead of economic purposes. This could cause the government to start a war to divert attention. "Even if this popular uprising is suppressed by the Iranian regime in the short term, given the absence of any solution to the Iranians' economic woes it is eventually bound to resurface. One option the regime may resort to in order to rekindle the people's solidarity with the regime despite the absence of any economic improvement is to spark crises or a war in one or more of the regional arenas in which Iran is involved-Israel, Bahrain or Yemen-by means of its proxies in these countries."

 

Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani claimed the Iranian unrest is led by Saudis living in Iran, and instigated by Israel. Persians are historically skeptical of Arabs. There is an ancient relationship between the modern Turkish and Iranian people, as recalled by Daniel 8's account of the Medo-Persia alliance. Today these countries share cultural and ethnic commonalities. The second largest ethnicity in Iran, the Azerbaijanis, are a Turkic people. The second largest ethnicity in Turkey is the Kurds, an Iranic people. The unrest allows Turkey to diplomatically strengthen relations with Iran. For Ezekiel 38 to play out, Iran must submit to Turkey's Gog to attack Israel in the end of days.  If the unrest brings Turkey and Iran into alignment, they could emerge as a unified power, moving the prophecy clock forward.

As we humble ourselves in prayer before You, and as we seek You and turn from our wicked ways, we thank You for Your promise to hear us, to forgive our sins and heal America.  We stand on Your promises, Lord.  Please show us how to do our part.

In the spirit of sincere humility, we open our hearts to You, Lord of all that is, all that was and all that ever will be.  This is Your world, Father.  You created it.  You own every square inch of it.  We are here but for a time.

We gratefully acknowledge that we live in a country founded on faith in You and Your word.  We also acknowledge how far we have strayed from You in this country.  In sincere humility, we plead for Your mercy, asking You to guide us back to You, our first love.

"Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. (20) Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (21) But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets."

Some of the faithful believe that justification and salvation by grace through faith just suddenly appeared when the Son of God lived and died in the first century.

They think that God changed His approach to saving men—that He was either losing the battle to Satan, or the way He had given man was just too difficult. It also implies that men under the Old Covenant were saved by keeping the law.

Once a person has sinned, he is under the penalty of the law, and his righteousness is not sufficient to justify him before God. Since all have sinned, the whole world is guilty before God. It takes a righteousness apart from law-keeping to do this.

Then Paul says that this righteousness is revealed in the Old Testament Law and Prophets! The teaching has been there all along, all through the centuries from Moses to Christ and down to our time! God never changed His course.

In the first century, He only openly revealed the means, Christ, through whom would come the righteousness that will justify anyone before God who receives Jesus as Savior.

Men have always been justified and saved by grace through faith.

People who were saved during Old Testament times looked forward in faith to this being accomplished through God's coming Messiah. We look backward at it as a promise and as fulfilled prophecy of the Messiah who has come.

"So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand," Exodus 4:20.

When Moses was called by God from his forty years in the desert to lead the people out of Egypt, God first changed his paradigm about his shepherd's staff which represented his work life as a shepherd. God told him He was going to perform miracles through his staff (v17).

A shepherd was considered a very lowly profession by the Egyptians. Moses had a time of breaking in the desert which separated him from all that he learned in Egypt. Many times, the way God calls us into His purpose in our work life is through a hardship of some kind.

God will often "break" our staff, or our vocation, in order to reshape and re-commission us. The purpose of the breaking is not to destroy us, but to bring us to a place of willingness to lay down our vocation so that God can use it for His purposes.

The breaking prepares our heart for the new calling.

God required Moses to lay down his staff in order for him to see it as something that had power. He had not viewed his work life as a shepherd as having any power.

God was instructing Moses to lay down that which represented his life and calling, so that He could transform it and raise it up for His purposes. Once Moses laid his staff down and took it back up, a significant change took place. It was no longer his shepherd's staff; it was the "staff of God."

God's staff has power. After Moses' staff became God's, it was used as the instrument of deliverance and transformation for the people of God. It delivered people out of the slavery of Egypt through one of the most dramatic miracles of all time -- the parting of the Red Sea (see Exodus 14:16).

Moses' staff, which had become God's staff, transformed a people from slavery to freedom and was used to demonstrate Moses' God-given authority.
