You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:14,16

His life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:4-5

Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law. Proverbs 29:18

I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland. Isaiah 43:19

Thank you, Lord, that in You America can once again become a "City on a Hill" - Your beacon to the world.

We petition You, Lord, to lead us according to Your plan, in Your timing, with the power of Your Holy Spirit. We know You are infinitely bigger and brighter than the darkness before us.

We ask that You remind us to keep our eyes and minds focused on what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. Help us to elevate conversations and relationships to those higher things. May You be the prompter and completer of any daunting tasks before us. In You only may we find our voice to speak, our strength to move.

We pray for a vision of victory over the assaults on America's faith in JESUS and Your will, Your ways, and Your provision for our needs. Teach us, Lord how to best fight efforts to separate this country, culture and people from You. Give us revelation power to lead our country back to You.

God in heaven, we pray that America may once again become a great beacon of Your standards.

As the world sees Your ways and Your love demonstrated in this great country, may all people be drawn to Your Son.

We pray for a compellingly attractive vision for the future of America based on the real America, founded and grounded on eternal truths. Bring us back, O Lord, to our First Love.

“We live in an age of science and of abounding accumulation of material things. These did not create the Declaration. Our Declaration created them. The things of the spirit come first. Unless we cling to that, all our material prosperity, overwhelming though it may appear, will turn to a barren sceptre in our grasp. If we are to maintain the great heritage which has been bequeathed to us, we must be like-minded as the fathers who created it. We must not sink into a pagan materialism. We must cultivate the reverence which they had for the things that are holy. We must follow the spiritual and moral leadership which they showed. We must keep replenished, that they may glow with a more compelling flame, the altar fires before which they worshipped.”
                                              President Calvin Coolidge – July 5, 1926

"Oh, eternal and everlasting God, direct my thoughts, words and work. Wash away my sins immaculate blood of the lamb and purge my heart by the Holy Spirit. Daily, frame me more and more in the like of thy son, Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor, I may in thy appointed time obtain the resurrection of the justified unto eternal life. Bless, O Lord, the whole race of mankind and let the world be filled with the knowledge of thy son, Jesus Christ."
                                                    George Washington's daily prayer

Wicked, Godless Rulers

"If MY people, who are called by MY name, will humble themselves and pray and seek MY face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land." II Chronicles 7:14

Wickedness pervades our land. America, which was once described as "a nation with the soul of a church" (Alec de Tocqueville) has become a purveyor of evil, a supplier pornography, a denizen of every foul demon that seeks a human to perform its wicked bidding.

And as John Calvin stated, our leaders are bold to call good evil and to call evil good.

With the election cycle before us, we have two candidates who have been described by Dick Morris as "one who speaks without political correctness and one who does evil."

Which one will we select?

In an age of political correctness, we are offended by one who boldly proclaims the concerns many feel but do not articulate.

In an age of rampant disregard for the law, will we embrace one who boldly flaunts a profound disregard for man's law and for GOD'S law?

In our effort to maintain the 'status quo' of political correctness that pervades the land, will we select a leader whose wickedness deserves imprisonment rather than the pinnacle of power?

If John Calvin is correct, our choice of a leader at this juncture in time is critical.

Unseen Force

There is an unseen force that dwells within every believer in CHRIST, and that force is the HOLY SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD. JESUS said of HIM that when HE had arisen, HE would send a "COMFORTER," who would "teach you all things." John 14:16, John 14:26, John 16:7

As you read the BIBLE, the HOLY SPIRIT will open the eyes of your understanding. As you pray, the HOLY SPIRIT will give you the words to speak to effect the will of GOD in your life. As you walk the CHRISTIAN life, the HOLY SPIRIT will guide you in the path of righteousness.

There is an unseen force that surrounds every believer in CHRIST, and that force is an army of angels. That force will protect you when you are under attack from the enemy. That force will shield you from the slings and arrows of wicked men.

Of that force, the BIBLE says, "HE will give HIS angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways." Psalm 91:11

Because of the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT, and because of the mighty angels, the person of faith need have no fear.

The believer in CHRIST shall be guided and guarded in all his ways -- and when comes the moment GOD shall call him home, he shall be ushered by the angels to the THRONE of MERCY and GRACE.

Gary Carman to JESUS IS MY LIFE I LIVE FOR GOD ONLY.

JESUS AND HIS ANGELS ARE PROTECTING YOU

GOD'S STRENGTH

Are you facing a formidable foe, a problem or a circumstance or a condition that defies remedy?

Does it loom so large over you that it casts a dark shadow upon all you think and all you do? Does it intensify in your mind as you ponder upon it?

Think about the word of GOD in the matter--"Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report--think on these things." Philippians 4:8

Don't dwell on the problem before you but upon the ONE TRUE, LOVELY, GOOD entity in the universe--think upon the LORD JESUS CHRIST!

Just as David knew GOD and relied upon HIM to bring down his overwhelming opponent, so can you rely upon the HOLY ONE to cast down every circumstance that stands between you and HIS perfect will for you.

As David was bold, so must you be bold.

As David was victorious, so will you be victorious.

David didn't need to know Goliath's strength because he already knew God's.

Words to Ponder

“Those the Father has given Me will come to Me, and I will never reject them." John 6:37

Quotes of Presidents
"We have no promise from God that our greatness will endure... If we fail now, we shall have forgotten...that the judgment of God is harshest on those who are most favored."  Lyndon Johnson

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you don't deserve me at my best.”  Marilyn Monroe

Thoughts of William Jennings Bryan

"Science is a magnificent force, but it is not a teacher of morals.

It can perfect machinery, but it adds no moral restraints to protect society from the misuse of the machine.

It can also build gigantic intellectual ships, but it constructs no moral rudders for the control of storm-tossed human vessel.

It not only fails to supply the spiritual element needed but some of its unproven hypotheses rob the ship of its compass and thus endanger its cargo.

In war, science has proven itself an evil genius; it has made war more terrible than it ever was before.
Man used to be content to slaughter his fellowmen on a single plane, the earth's surface.

Science has taught him to go down into the water and shoot up from below and to go up into the clouds and shoot down from above, thus making the battlefield three times as bloody as it was before; but science does not teach brotherly love.

Science has made war so hellish that civilization was about to commit suicide; and now we are told that newly discovered instruments of destruction will make the cruelties of the late war seem trivial in comparison with the cruelties of wars that may come in the future.

If civilization is to be saved from the wreckage threatened by intelligence not consecrated by love, it must be saved by the moral code of the meek and lowly Nazarene.

His teachings, and His teachings alone, can solve the problems that vex the heart and perplex the world."                    William Jennings Bryan

Which Is the Greatest Commandment?

July 31
Which Is the Greatest Commandment?  by John W. Ritenbaugh

"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?   Jesus said to him, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."   Matthew 22:36-40  (See also Mark 12:28-31 and Luke 10:25-28)

Jesus Christ's response to the Pharisee's question shows that He divided the Ten Commandments into two sections or tables. He covers the first four by saying, "'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment" (verses 37-38). This supersedes all other commandments; none is greater. The second, covering the last six, is similar to it. "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (verse 39).

God also arranged each section to begin with the most important command.  He placed first the commandment, which, if kept, will ensure the greatest benefit to our lives, both physically and spiritually.

On the other hand, if we break this commandment, it will cause the most damage to our worship of God or to the community by virtually ensuring that we will break others. In the first table of the law, this commandment is, "You shall have no other gods before Me" (See Exodus 20:2).

In the second, it is the fifth commandment: "Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you" (See verse 12).
Just as the first commandment governs our relationship with God, the fifth commandment is first among those that govern our relationships with men. When we keep it or break it, it affects those relationships.

Not only is it chief in this section, it also acts as a bridge between the two tables of the law. When we keep the fifth commandment properly, it leads us to revere and obey God Himself.

A Brief History of an Early American City

A Brief History of an Early American City by Bill Federer

William Penn was arrested and imprisoned several times for sharing his politically incorrect views which were not in agreement with the government's agenda. Once he was imprisoned in the Tower of London for eight months.

While in London's notorious Newgate Prison, William Penn wrote 1670: "By Liberty of Conscience, we understand not only a mere Liberty of the Mind...but the exercise of ourselves in a visible way of worship, upon our believing it to be indispensably required at our hands, that if we neglect it for fear or favor of any mortal man, we sin, and incur divine wrath."

Another dissenter in London's Newgate Prison was an early Baptist leader Thomas Helwys, who wrote in 1612: "The King is a mortal man, and not God, therefore he hath no power over the mortal soul of his subjects to make laws and ordinances for them and to set spiritual Lords over them."

Thomas Helwys who died in the Newgate Prison in 1616, had written A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity: "If the Kings people be obedient and true subjects, obeying all humane lawes made by the King, our Lord the King can require no more: for men's religion to God is betwixt God and themselves; the King shall not answer for it, neither may the King be judge between God and man."

Later, Baptist minister John Leland, who helped found Baptist churches in Connecticut, wrote in Rights of Conscience Inalienable, 1791: "Every man must give account of himself to God, and therefore every man ought to be at liberty to serve God in a way that he can best reconcile to his conscience. If government can answer for individuals at the day of judgment, let men be controlled by it in religious matters; otherwise, let men be free."

William Penn's father died in 1670. In 1682, King Charles II, in repayment of a debt he owed to him, gave land to his son, William Penn - 45,000 square miles. This enormous amount of land, called Pennsylvania, made William Penn the largest non-royal landowner in the world.

On this land William Penn started a colony and invited persecuted Christians of Europe to join his "Holy Experiment" of religious toleration.

Soon Quakers, Mennonites, Pietists, Amish, Anabaptists, Lutherans,
Reformed, Moravians, Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, Dunkers (German Baptist), Brethren, Schwenckfelders, French Huguenots and
other Protestant Christians arrived in Pennsylvania.

Penn named his capital city Philadelphia, which means "Brotherly Love." He dedicated Philadelphia's first church, Gloria Dei "Old Swede's" Church in 1646. Penn's religious tolerance allowed the church to grow and build their present church building in 1698.

In 1695, the Merion Friends (Quaker) Meeting House was built. It is the oldest church building in Pennsylvania and second oldest Friends meeting house in the United States. In 1695, Philadelphia's Christ Church was built. It is called "the Nation's Church," as George Washington, Betsy Ross, Benjamin and Deborah Franklin, and their daughter, Sarah Franklin Bache, worshiped there, along with Signers of the Declaration John Adams, Benjamin Rush, Francis Hopkinson, Joseph Hewes, Robert Morris, James Wilson and George Ross.

In 1711, Old Trinity Episcopal Church was built in Philadelphia. In 1732, the Seventh Day Dunkers (German Baptist Brethern) built Ephrata Cloister near Philadelphia. They had the second German printing press in America and published the largest book in the colonies, "Martyrs Mirror," listing Christian martyrs from Christ until 1660.

In 1733, Philadelphia allowed the first English-speaking Catholic Church in the world after the Reformation - St. Joseph Church. It was the only place in the British Empire where a public Catholic church service took place legally. Marquis de Lafayette and Comte de Rochambeau worshiped there.

On May 21, 1789, the first General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America was held in Philadelphia. Signer of the Declaration John Witherspoon preached the first sermon at that assembly.

Philadelphia is the birthplace of the Methodist Episcopal churches in America, with St. George's Church, built in 1769, being the denomination's oldest church building in continuous service in the world. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, sent the church a communion chalice.

St. George's pastor, Francis Asbury, was the first Methodist bishop.
He traveled 270,000 miles on horseback and ordained more than 4,000 ministers, including Richard Allen and Absalom Jones, the first African American Lay Preachers of Methodism in 1785. In 1792, Absalom Jones started the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, being the oldest black Episcopal congregation in the United States.

In 1794, Richard Allen started the African Methodist Episcopal Church, building "Mother Bethel," the first A.M.E. Church in America.
In 1796, also out of St. George's, Rev. "Black Harry" Hosier started the African Zoar Church. St. George's appointed Mary Thorne as the first woman class leader.

Philadelphia's first synagogue, Mikveh Israel, was built in 1782 by Sephardic Jews from Spain, Portugal and the West Indies, many of whom fled from New York in 1776, when the British captured the city.
Contributors to the building fund were Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris-Signer of the Declaration, and Haym Solomon, Polish Jew financier of the American Revolution. Beginning in 1845, Rabbi Isaac Leeser of Philadelphia's Mikveh Israel synagogue produced the first Jewish translation of the Bible into English to be published in the United States.

When Mikveh Israel synagogue burned in 1872, Philadelphia's Christ Church contributed to rebuild it. The two congregations have a long custom of sharing a fellowship-dinner once a year which alternates between their two buildings. In 1795, the first Ashkenazic Jewish synagogue in the Western Hemisphere was founded in Philadelphia, Congregation Rodeph Shalom.

Pennsylvania's Charter, granted March 4, 1681, stated: "Whereas our trusty and well beloved subject, William Penn, esquire, son and heir of Sir William Penn, deceased (William Penn died on JULY 30, 1718), out of a commendable desire to enlarge our English Empire...and also to reduce the savage natives by gentle and just manners to the love of civil society and Christian religion, hath humbly besought leave of us to transport an ample colony unto...parts of America not yet cultivated and planted."

Lutheran missionary Johannes Campanius translated the very first book published in the Algonquin Indian language, Martin Luther's Small Catechism.

William Penn wrote in his Charter of Privileges for Pennsylvanians 1701: "...no people can be truly happy though under the greatest enjoyments of civil liberties if abridged of the freedom of their consciences as to their religious profession and worship."

William Penn's "holy experiment" of "Brotherly Love" resulted in Philadelphia providentially being where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were written, as well as the city being the first Capital of the United States.

Upright citizens are good for a city and make it prosper, but the talk of the wicked tears it apart. Proverbs 11:11

I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds Hebrews 10:16

Like a trampled spring and a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked. Proverbs 25:26

We will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Ephesians 4:14

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting James 1:5-6

Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. Romans 13:7

Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." Mark 12:17

Teach us, Lord, to value our role as citizens. Awaken in the electorate a desire to know the true principles upon which this country was built, and draw us to Your vision for the restoration of our beloved country.

Let us never take for granted the free land You have given us. Please show us, Lord, how to do our part to secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and those to come after us.

We ask for leaders and a citizenry who truly understand our accountability before You for every vote we cast, or do not cast. Help us to wisely evaluate every candidate and policy against your Word. We ask for the wisdom to vote as You would have us vote.

We ask You to grant our citizens the wisdom to discern truth from spin and deception. Give us radar to know when a candidate or policy is counterfeit to the true founding principles and Constitutional roots of this land, borne out of faith in You and Your word.

Move our leaders and our citizens to rightly divide the responsibilities of government vs. the responsibilities of citizens as defined by You.

God Almighty, we plead with You to guide, guard, convict and correct all candidates, campaigns, consultants, political operatives and staff members. We ask You to draw them to integrity before the citizens of this country. Give them the will to honestly place their values and visions before us, free of manipulation and deception. We ask You to expose and defeat those who lie.

We pray, Lord, against the voter fraud that has so crippled our confidence in the electoral process. We ask You to expose and bring to justice those who would undermine free and fair elections. Please help us to restore integrity to the election process in America. Rid our system of corruption, we pray.

O Lord, give me the wisdom and the courage to confidently and winsomely take a stand for Your Truth with my fellow citizens. Use my voice, Lord, to glorify JESUS, I pray.

“Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature...If the next centennial does not find us a great nation...it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.” President James Garfield – July 4, 1876

The Blood of JESUS

There will be times in life when GOD'S ancient foe will pursue you relentlessly. Because he sees the LORD'S holy purpose in you, he will endeavor with every scheme in his arsenal of sin to destroy you.

At these times, there is nothing more effective that a beleaguered believer can do but to PLEAD THE BLOOD OF JESUS!

Plead the Blood of JESUS over everyone and everything that is important to you. Plead the Blood of JESUS over yourself.

There is POWER IN THE BLOOD!

When

Everyone has a picture inside his head of who he wants to be and what he wants to accomplish.

Everyone has goals and dreams that propel him forward through the day-to-day challenges of life and inspire him to go forward when disappointments come.

But there comes a time in every life when it becomes apparent that the goals and dreams will not be realized, that the hopes one holds most dear are either beyond ones grasp or--if attained--are unable to satisfy.

When these disappointments come, when these failures are confronted, may we turn to the LIVING GOD who has a better plan for each of us than anything we can conjure for ourselves.

May HE help us to realize that our failures are a springboard to HIS work coming to fruition in us.

As long as we want what we want, we cannot see what HE wants for us.

As long as we strive toward attaining our own goals, we cannot reach for HIS.

When we stop living life for ourselves, when we stop pursuing what we think will make us happy and fulfilled--THEN--can we live for JESUS and pursue the things HE wants us to possess.

When we attain HIS gifts for us--hope, joy, peace, grace, mercy, love--we will know what it means to be free! We will know what it means to be released from bondage to the temporal and embraced by the treasure of the eternal.

Thank YOU, JESUS

Thank YOU, JESUS, for all YOU have done for me.

Thank YOU for sheltering me when the onslaught of the enemy came against me.

Thank YOU for helping me when I struggled against formidable trials.

Thank YOU for holding me when I had slipped.
Thank YOU for lifting me when I had fallen.
Thank YOU for finding me when I was lost.
Thank YOU for fixing me when I was broken.
Thank YOU for holding me when I was weeping.

Thank YOU for forgiving me when I had sinned.

You Don't Have to Fight Alone

No one can fight life's battles alone. No one has the stamina to keep overcoming the temptations, to keep rebuking the enemy in all his guises without the help of ONE who is greater than himself.

That ONE is JESUS. That ONE who reminds the weary warrior, "No temptation has come against you but that which is common to man." I Corinthians 10:13

That ONE is JESUS who assures the battle-weary fighter that, "Greater is HE who is in you than he who is in the world." I John 4:4

If your burden seems to heavy to bear today, remember the ONE who has invited you to, "Cast all your cares on JESUS, for HE cares for you." I Peter 5:7

JESUS will "never fail you nor forsake you." Hebrews 13:5

When you walk through the storm, HE is the ONE who will speak to the raging, torrential downpour, "Peace. Be still." Mark 4:39

Words to Ponder

"Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath." Ephesians 4:26

Quotes of Presidents
“When angry, count to ten before you speak. If very angry, count to one hundred.” Thomas Jefferson

“Anger is often more hurtful to a man than the injury that caused it.” English Proverb
