The Power of the Tongue by Os Hillman
Words have the power to bring death or life. Is that an overstatement? Not according to Jesus. Jesus cursed the fig tree and it died.
What happens to your spirit when someone criticizes you or says harmful things about you? Something inside of you is affected. Your dreams might even die.
What if you are told growing up, “You can’t do anything right! You’ll never amount to anything!”
Many a leader has become an over-achiever in an effort to overcome those words spoken to them as a child. Founder of CNN, Ted Turner, often said his success was due to wanting to prove the words his father spoke over him to be false. So, he could never be too successful.
The current political climate is a perfect example of how words can inspire people to do bad things. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. - Proverbs 18:21
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. – Ephesians 4:29
Sometimes we use harmful words because they were used when we were being raised by our parents. That means we have to revisit that time in our life and renew our minds to reclaim our true identity.
Today, examine how many words come out of your mouth that give life versus death.
Resolve to be one who brings life to those around him through words of grace and hope and faith and love. This is best done by sharing the JESUS you love with everyone whose life touches yours.
