There are some happy, exuberant faces in the news today.
The largest lottery ever--over a billion dollars--has been won by at least three people, perhaps more. No matter how many ways the prize will ultimately be split, the fact is that the winners will soon come into some big bucks.
Those who hold losing tickets (millions bought them with high hopes of being the lucky winner) will trudge to work today and life will go on as usual. Being basically at least somewhat realistic, this is what most expected would be the outcome of their purchase.
The lottery is far from a sure thing. It's 180 degrees from the tried
and true method for accruing wealth which is to work hard and to have a
systematic plan for saving money. But one thing it affords to those who
play the game is a momentary escape from their mundane daily routine.
Our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST holds out something far better to us than a winning lottery ticket. He came to deliver us from sin and its consequence, which is eternal death. The Lord came to give us "beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." Isaiah 61:3
He came to give us the promise that one day, when the roll is called up yonder, we will be there.
