An ironic aside to the establishment of Israel as a nation is that
prior to his death, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had promised
King Abdul Aziz Ibin Saud of Saudi Arabia, a muslim nation that did not want a Jewish state in the Jews' ancient homeland, that the United States would not recognize the
state of Israel.
Within two weeks of making that promise, FDR had died on April 12, 1945 at the age of 63.
Harry S. Truman who had been the Vice President, assumed the office of
President. One of his first acts was to acknowledge in the behalf of
the United States, the new nation of Israel.
