"It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35
.
Many people have a very difficult time discovering this truth, not because of a lack of opportunity to give--give of our time, give of our talents, give of our money, give of ourselves--but because of a lack of willingness to give.
As much as we like to think we are generous, in essence, many of us are not. We justify ourselves by telling ourselves that we have earned what we have.
We have certainly spent enough of ourselves already. Don't we go to
work every day! Don't we volunteer for worthy causes! Don't we
contribute to help those who are in dire circumstances! Who could
expect more of us?
God.
God expects more of us because He gave the finest Treasure of Heaven to purchase our salvation. Nothing we give can ever begin to approximate the "unspeakable Gift," II Corinthians 9:15, that was spent in order to redeem us from the destruction of sin, to claim us from death and damnation.
Our redemption was settled in Heaven before the foundation of the earth because the Holy One, in His foreknowledge, had prepared our escape from sin even before we were fashioned from the dust.
His precognition recognized the dilemma sin would become to His loftiest creation, but His love compelled Him to form man anyway.
Because of His unfathomable love, HE gave. Because of His unfathomable love, HE desires that we give, so we can own the great blessing of imparting to others that which we cherish for ourselves.
