Columbus Day

Columbus Day

Today, we are celebrating the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492.  Many scholars believe that this continent was discovered much earlier than the arrival of Columbus, and, of course, many dispute his (or any European) having discovered it at all because the Native Americans were here long before any of them.

October 12 has long been identified as the date of the landing of Columbus in the Americas, so our celebration is not on the actual date of discovery.

Columbus was searching for a trade route to the lucrative resources of India.  The over-land route had been rendered too dangerous to traverse by the muslims, whose territories had to be crossed to reach the dazzling jewels of India.

Upon his arrival to the land Christopher Columbus believed to be India, he determinedly set about to convert the "Indians" to Christianity.

In spite of this noble intent, Columbus and his crew have since been accused of far more nefarious intents than persuading the infidels to embrace JESUS as their SAVIOR/

Between today and October 12, I will post some of the actual quotes of Columbus...perhaps in reading his words, we can better ascertain his actual motivation in coming to these shores.

"By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination." Christopher Columbus
