There's an old hymn that proclaims, "What a FRIEND we have in JESUS..." and it's true, our Lord and Savior is our best friend. A Bible verse proclaims, "No greater love exists than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13
The human capacity for love and kindness and self-sacrifice is great and finds expression in the compatible donor who gives an organ to extend to a stranger an opportunity to live.
That willingness to sacrifice oneself is epitomized by the soldier who jumps on a live grenade to save the lives of his squad.
But the ultimate expression of this kind of friendship is that of
JESUS, who "being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal
with God, but made Himself of no reputation and took on the form of a
man and became obedient to death." Philippians 2:6-11
Why did He die? He died so we don't have to die.
Because of sin, a penalty was imposed upon man, and his sentence was death. But because of His unfathomable love for us, JESUS, member of the Triune Majesty, became one of us!
He took our punishment upon Himself. He died in our place.
No greater love has any man than this, that HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
