Things Have Improved

Things have improved for teachers, but they still complain!

Haven't they noticed that they are no longer paid so little salary that they have to board in the homes of their students?

Doesn't it matter to them that they're no longer required to remain single! They are now permitted to have families and homes of their own!

Simply getting to school is so much easier for them today--no more long walks in the snow at 5 AM so they can shovel the snow a build a fire in the wood burning stove before the students arrive.

And they don't have to chop the wood for the stove.

Their classroom sizes are far more manageable. Instead of having a class of 40 or more children of ages ranging from five to seventeen within the walls of a single classroom, they have a mere twenty or thirty students.

The school district supplies textbooks for them today (and some of them have even been purchased within the last five years!)

They have performance reviews now that help them to stay poised on the cutting edge of educational ideas.

A classroom budget is provided for each teacher so she will have a supply of things like notebooks and pencils and art supplies for students who need them and classroom supplies such as chalk and erasers. These budgets sometimes exceed two hundred dollars for the year!

Perhaps best of all, they are given oversight by school boards, made up largely of people with no background in education who will determine their salaries.

Yet they want more. Who do they think they are, lawyers?
