Collateral Damage


Collateral Damage

There is a story out of the Battle of Antietam that never fails to touch my heart. 

The conflict was raging when it was noticed that a small child had wondered onto the battlefield. Both sides noticed.

White flags were raised by both armies while someone picked up the child and returned her safely to her mother.

When we hear news of 'collateral damage' in war, may we be mindful that there was a time when men, even in the throes of one of the most horrific battles of the Civil War, took time to assure the safety of the civilian population.
