Affirmation

Affirmation
Internationally renown Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson was appointed U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Trump administration.
Dr. Carson has had a viable personal experience with the power of affirmation to turn a family from poverty to prosperity. He is quoted as saying:
"My mother worked as a domestic, two, sometimes three jobs at a time because she didn't want to be on welfare.
"She felt very strongly that if she gave up and went on welfare, that she would give up control of her life and the lives of her children, and I think the evidence affirms that she was correct about that.
"But, one tremendously valuable thing she provided my brother and me was a tremendous example of what hard work is like. The more solid the family foundation, the more likely you are to be able to not only overcome poverty, but to resist peer pressure.
"Because human beings are social creatures, we all want to belong, we all have that desire, and we will belong, one way or another. If the family doesn't provide us with a safe haven in which to grow, we will seek out associations with other entities such as school clubs or gangs.
"Without family, peers will, or a gang will, afford the lost child something to belong to.
"That's why it is so critical for families with young children to understand what a crucial anchor they are. That is why it is essential for schools and churches to support local families rather than forcing them to seek governmental support"
