The Beauty of Autumn

The beauty of Autumn is before us in all its splendor. It is a testimony of the ability of the LORD we love and serve to, "Bring beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness..."
At its essence, Autumn is a season of death. All of Nature is shutting down, closing shop for the duration of the year. There will be no lush foliage, there will be no bountiful harvest, there will be no warm sunshine, there will be no warm breezes until the new year brings the flourishing of Spring.
And yet we celebrate Autumn!
Perhaps our ability to bask in the loveliness of a season that bodes the barrenness of Winter should remind us that in the seasons of the spirit there is also reason to rejoice, no matter the ominous foreboding of loss and death that clouds our later years.
Perhaps we should allow the beauty of Autumn to be reflected in the autumn of our years and stem the foreboding of the death that Winter will bring.
Maybe we can allow our spiritual eyes to turn toward the newness of life that is promised to us. Maybe we can allow ourselves to see the glory of the eternal Spring and glorious Summer that await us once we have passed through the fallen leaves of our lives and trudged through the snow that will engulf us in death.
Perhaps we can allow ourselves to rejoice in the hope HE has set before us; perhaps we can see beyond the dying temporal life we are living to the eternal glory of the joys and blessings that are forever ours.
