God Is Good

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever." Psalm 23:6

God is indeed good. The bounty we enjoy from our labors, the relationships we have that fulfill the longings of our hearts, the hope we have of eternal life--all these blessings and the simple gifts of the food we eat and the air we breathe--are poured out upon us from His loving hand.

Yet we turn to other gods for satisfaction. We turn to the movie industry for adventure rather than to the beaches and mountains where we can encounter challenges and rewards that strengthen our minds and our bodies.

We turn to rich delicacies that are laden with fat and sugar and calories for our dining pleasure instead of to the bountiful produce with which He has laden our gardens.

We turn to raunchy entertainers for our musical enjoyment instead of to the uplifting hymns of the church and we wonder why our bodies are overweight and our emotions are stressed.

Some of us even have the audacity to wonder, after we have languished in front of our TVs instead of exercising and consumed a bag of chips as we watched our favorite programs for the evening, 'Why did God make me overweight?'

The choices we make impact every area of our lives, yet we tend to allocate the blame for the results of our decisions to the Lord; we allow ourselves to believe that He has let us down because we do not want to assume responsibility for ourselves; we don't want to make the necessary changes to our lifestyle that would transform us into the people we want to be.

Instead of evading our responsibilities, we should embrace them. Instead of wasting our time and consuming our energy on nothingness, let us rise up as thinkers and planners who develop strategies for our own well-being.

Let us enlist the aid of the God who wants us to develop the best of ourselves to the glory of His name rather than convince ourselves that He is thwarting our desire to be better than we are.
We serve a good and loving God who has given the best of Heaven in order that we may be blessed on earth as we are blessed eternally.
