The ruins of any society are interesting to visit. They give an insight to the life of a long-ago people whose contribution to life today can be significant if we are willing to learn from them.
One of the significant differences between this old desert town and today's modern cosmopolitan centers is that here the individual was left to his own devices. No one will ever accuse these ancient ruins of being home to a 'nanny state.'
A prime example of this assertion is the fact that very deep wells had been dug (they had to be deep to reach water in this desert location) without any protective wall or restriction of any sort being constructed around them.
One can see in the mind's eye many small children playing in close proximity to them without an adult nearby. How many youngsters lost their lives to this oversight? We will never know.
What we do know is that a society continued to grow and thrive in spite of the lack of governmental oversight.
Should we be so lax today in caring for our populace? Perhaps not, but neither should we shroud our citizens in so many laws and regulations that freedom is stiffed and personal responsibility is replaced with the ever-present government nanny.
