God, Are You Fair?
Early in my walk with Christ, I was quite conflicted by the inequities I saw all around me. My troubled mind and spirit could not put aside the seeming discrepancy between the Biblical assurance that the Lord loves everyone and the inconsistencies of the lives I saw all around me.
One day, while performing a mundane task, I wept so profusely that I could hardly see what I was doing so I stopped, buried my face in my hands and cried out, "God! How can You say You're fair when some men are so rich and others are so poor? When some are so healthy and others are so sick? When some live long, fruitful lives while others die so young?"
I didn't expect an answer. I was just venting. But HE responded to me in a way I will never forget.
The HOLY ONE spoke to my heart and mind and spirit very clearly in words I could not hear but words that I could not mistake. He said, "Christ is the great EQUALIZER."
And HE did not leave me to figure out what those words meant by myself. He went on to explain:
"Without Christ, the rich man is impoverished amid his great wealth, but the poor man who owns Christ possesses all things.
"Without Jesus, the well man is perishing in the sickness of sin but the sick man who embraces Him as Savior and Lord is whole and well eternally.
"Without Jesus as Savior, the live man is dead in trespasses and sin but the dead man who has placed his life at the feet of the Holy One is alive forevermore."
CHRIST IS THE EQUALIZER.
To look upon the countenance of the unfortunate man pictured here is to see someone to whom life has dealt a most unkind blow. Imagine him as a whole, healthy child with hopes and aspirations for the future that everyone has--to pursue a career, to marry, to have children, to interact with friends and neighbors and co-workers--then to have all these things denied to him because of a freakish accident that robbed him of even sight and sense, of hope.
To be pursued by the curious who stood aghast at his appearance, to be taunted and mocked because of his disfigurement, to be an outcast who walked alone at night to avoid being an affront to the sensibilities of his fellow men...this was his portion in life. GOD, ARE YOU FAIR?
Yet, Christ is the Equalizer. This precious soul has left this Vale of Tears and now abides where the treasures and afflictions of life are no more; where, "God wipes away all tears from their eyes and there is no more death, neither sorrow nor pain, for the former things are passed away." Revelation 21:4
