Is driving around the neighborhood, looking at all the beautiful CHRISTMAS decorations, one of the things you do at this season of the year?
Many of us enjoy the displays of Santa and his reindeer, colored lights and Nativity scenes in people's yards and the lights gleaming a warm welcome from their windows. These and so many other wonderful traditions help make the CHRISTMASES of our past memorable.
Yet we must not allow the stunning displays of plastic figurines and lights distract us from the true meaning of the holiday we are celebrating. We cannot allow the fact that the day we have set aside to honor the birth of our SAVIOR may not be the actual date of HIS birth.
We cannot allow the wrapping of presents and the baking of cookies to
take our minds away from the glorious reason for our celebration. If we
do, we will be allowing ourselves to settle for the dregs rather than
enjoying the full cup of our salvation.
What our LORD and KING has poured out for us is the elixir that will save us from the penalty of our sin and we must drink to the dregs of it if we are to inherit the joy of our salvation.
We cannot allow the pealing of the CHRISTMAS bells or the brilliance of the illuminated windows and yards or the delectable smells emanating from our kitchens or the colorful packages under our trees to distract us from the singular reason "the WORD became flesh and dwelt among us."
