Watching the Game...

 ...A Great Cloud of Witnesses

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Hebrews 12:1

Americans love sporting events. At every season of the year, the sports arenas and stadiums will be filled with people who have paid big bucks to watch their teams strive for victory on the playing field. Hockey fans are currently cheering on their favorites as they strive for the Stanley Cup.

It is easy to forget that there is a greater game going on than the NFL or NBA or any other league can orchestrate, and that is the Game of Life, in which we are all participants.

The Game of Life is more an individual rather than a team sport. While players support their families and their business associates and their nation by their participation, essentially, they play independently. All final awards will be handed out individually.

While selling tickets to professional games is big business, no one thinks very seriously about the fact that the Game of Life is the most-watched activity on the planet. Those of us who remain on the playing field are being observed by "a great cloud of witnesses."

Those witnesses are people, who, like ourselves, have competed in this universal sport, and have gone on to their eternal reward. The crowd is composes as well of Heavenly observers such as angels and saints.

GOD HIMSELF. who "desires that all men be saved," is observing the progress of each player and encouraging each participant in the game by the power of HIS HOLY SPIRIT.

The ultimate goal in football is to win the Super Bowl; in hockey, it is to achieve the Stanley Cup. Every sport has its great prize, for which each team, each player, gives his all throughout the season. In the Game of Life, the ultimate prize is Heaven.

Shouldn't every player be fervent and passionate about winning the game?
