Signs

Signs
"There will be signs in the heavens and signs on earth..."

Extraordinary phenomena have shaped our earth. Volcanoes have formed islands. Earthquakes have opened canyons. The relentless waves of the sea have established coastlines. There is nothing unusual about the extraordinary things that are occurring to our planet.

Except, perhaps, the rapidity at which they are happening.

Meteors careen through space as they always have but astronomers are detecting them with far more sophisticated equipment than they have ever had--and what they are able to see is frightening!

The chance of the earth being struck by one of these monsters from outer space that defy anything man can do to arrest them in their progress is astronomical.

And the calving of glaciers is observable today. An event that most have not known to exist, that human eye has rarely seen, can be viewed from a home computer screen.

What is man to think of these and so many other natural events over which he has no control?
His options are to dismiss them as being beyond his control or to fret over them, knowing that his anxiety cannot alleviate the problem.

His third alternative is to leave these things in the hand of our MIGHTY GOD, knowing that HE is able to control the circumstances that are of greater magnitude than mere man can circumvent.

LORD JESUS, we recognize that our planet is careening toward its own destruction, and we grasp the reality that we have no power to counter the ultimate collision with reality that seems inevitable.
We who believe in YOUR complete control over every situation that confronts mankind, lay the threats that confront our Earth before YOU and ask YOU to keep that which we have committed to YOU.

We ask YOU to guard this wayward planet that is peopled by errant men. We ask YOU to allow YOUR power and YOUR provision and YOUR love to avert the disaster that looms before us, even as YOU guard each person and allow YOUR power and YOUR provision and YOUR love to avert the challenges he faces in his day-to-day life.

We recognize that YOU who formed the universe and everything that exists hold the entirety of creation in the hollow of YOUR hand, and we ask YOU to hold us--as a planet and as a people and as a person--close to YOUR heart of love.

We ask that YOU save us from destruction--planetary destruction or personal destruction--not because we are worthy but because YOU love us.

We give YOU the glory, dear LORD, for all the harm YOU have kept us from in the past and for the devastation YOU keep us from today. We place our tomorrows at YOUR feet and ask YOU to glorify YOURSELF in everything YOU permit to touch the work of YOUR own hand.

In YOUR mighty, matchless name we pray, JESUS. Amen.
