The Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Red Skelton was a comedian who was beloved by the entire nation. Everyone would sit in front of their black and white TVs and allow themselves to be regaled with laughter for the duration of his weekly program.

His audience got a surprise one evening when he diverged from his usual serving of humor to remind us of how blessed we are to be Americans, to have the right and the responsibility to pledge our allegiance to this great country.

May all of us--from those in the greatest house in the land on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. to those in the smallest house in any ordinary neighborhood-- take renewed pride in saying the pledge to our flag and may we take renewed devotion to the country for which it stands.

A salute to Old Glory, we revisit an all-time classic rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance.
In 1969, Red Skelton performed a self-written monologue about the Pledge of Allegiance at the first "Evening at the White House."
